The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota announces openings for six new full-time tenure-track or tenured positions in the broad areas of nanotechnology, medical devices, energy and fluid power. Successful applicants will complement existing strength areas of the department in heat and mass transfer, design, systems and controls, aerosol science and technology, biomechanical engineering, and plasma science and technology. The candidate’s engineering expertise and documented research activity must demonstrate a strong potential toward enhancing both the undergraduate teaching and the graduate teaching and research missions of the department. Successful candidates are expected to build strong, externally-funded, highly-visible research programs and to become recognized leaders in the field. The broad areas of the search are congruent with major Institute of Technology and Department of Mechanical Engineering initiatives for growth. The University of Minnesota’s Institute of Technology includes departments of engineering, physical sciences, computer science and mathematics – a nationally unique structure that facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations. Applicants must have a doctorate in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline. Rank will depend upon the qualifications and experience of the applicants.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering has a strong tradition of excellence in education and research. The department currently has 41 tenured or tenure-track faculty and graduates about 200 undergraduate students annually. It is home to graduate programs in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering, with a total graduate enrollment of about 250 M.S. and Ph.D. students. The department is home to a new NSF Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power.

The Purdue University strategic plan calls for expanded participation in Discovery, Learning, and Engagement. To achieve this goal the University is in the process of hiring over 300 new faculty members and is emphasizing interdisciplinary research, in part through establishment of the $100M Discovery Park (http://www.purdue.edu/dp).
The College of Engineering strategic plan calls for increasing the size of the engineering faculty from 289 members (as of 2001) to 395 (by 2009). These faculty will have academic homes in one or more of the Schools in the College, and most will be affiliated with nine signature areas (https://engineering.purdue.edu/Engr/Research/SignatureAreas). The signature areas contain faculty working in all ten Centers in Discovery Park Centers.
Ideal candidates should have expertise in one or more fields specified below and should be interested in their application to fluid power systems:
- Analysis, modeling and simulation of multi-domain systems
- Modeling and control of hydraulically driven flexible robots
- Distributed sensing, controls, acoustics and diagnostics for complex fluid power systems
- Functional fluids, ER fluids and/or tribological systems
- Design and motion control of water hydraulic systems
- Simulation of large-scale systems and human-machine systems
- Modeling, design and control of wearable power assist devices and/or portable robots
- Modeling, design and control of pneumatic systems
- Modeling and control of micro fluid power systems
Applicants should have a few years of industry experience or demonstrated research funding from industry and government agencies. The ERC is affiliated with the Energy Center of Purdue’s Discovery Park. Candidates with multi-disciplinary research focus are particularly encouraged.
